And so, as our journey continues, we discover a very old and tattered newspaper..........
Life in the Stone Age was tough, with a life expectancy of no longer than 35-40 years. A typical Stone Age diet consisted of whatever you could catch or hunt; fish and shellfish, deer, mammoth, fruits and nuts, etc. It is from what they eat that earlier Stone Age peoples became known as "Hunter-Gatherers"; hunting animals and gathering berries.
Houses were very different in the Stone Age. As people began to move from the caves, they started to make houses from wattle branches, and daubing or cementing them with mud for strength. What do you think would have been the biggest safety hazard for these houses? Why?
Subjects: English, History, Art, Drama
English: With the class, the teacher could hold an oral language lesson on the newspaper. What might have made the news had newspapers been around back then? Talk and discussion. The children could create their own Stone Age newspapers. Children could create their own Stone Age menus and advertise their restaurant.
Art: Children could create their own Stone Age houses from lollipop sticks, using this as a substitute for wattle and clay as a substitute for daub.
Drama: Character exploration. Children could adopt the role of a person in their Stone Age newspapers. Perhaps the man who discovered fire? Maybe a man attacked by the sabre tooth? Conscience ally: Easier times to life? No guns, threat of beasts, etc.
